PSA 19:13 Also keep back Thy servant from presumptuous sins; Let them not rule over me; Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.
PSA 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
We’re all familiar with verse14, but I love vs. 13. I had a ‘misunderstanding’ with a friend this week…one of those where it’s better to NOT explain reasons but to just leave it alone before you have more problems. It’s been a bit of a challenge to let it go. Human nature is to defend & argue & have to ‘be right.’ But someone once said ‘the only right you have as a believer is the right to be wronged.’ I found this verse the same night of the misunderstanding and I’ve clung to it since. Just chew on vs. 13…it’s so rich.
Presumptuous sins. WOW! All those mental conversations we have with ourselves about someone else’s actions or their motives (what WE perceive to be the motives) or our opinions on their actions…all presumptuous sins. And look at the reward from the Lord when we protect ourselves (take thoughts captive): we shall be acquitted of GREAT transgression! Those presumptuous sins lead to more problems!
And how do we keep ourselves from those presumptuous sins? Vs. 14….the internal stuff. What we think about (Phil. 4). But what’s REALLY cool is that the verse covers it from both ends: WORDS OF MY MOUTH…what comes OUT of my mouth AND the MEDITATION OF MY HEART…what I think about BEFORE it comes out of my mouth. God just covers all the bases, doesn’t He? There’s no running!
So the presumptuous sins start in the mind and then cause ‘great transgression’ when they come out of the mouth. It’s not just a matter of keeping the mouth shut. It’s a matter of stopping the thoughts before they come to fruition.
And yes…that’s the hard part. I’ve had to stop MANY thoughts as I apply this verse in the last 24 hours. But it’s been good. I keep chewing on ‘then I will be acquitted of GREAT transgression.’ I don’t want to cause problems and by keeping my mouth shut & stopping the presumptuous sins in my mind I can love my friend & honor the Lord. God never said it’d be easy. It’s a fight with the flesh. But God is winning with each passing day – it’s easier to ‘let it go.’ It’s only HIM, ‘cuz my flesh wants to defend & explain.
I love verses that pop into my life at ‘just’ the right time! I can chew on them for days!
Have a great rest of the week!
